GuestI found another movie poster with a young Marco Polo riding on a kite. What would have happened in a Gale?

GuestThe debate about Marco PolO is interesting. I wonder if he really did go to China myself. I think these will be great movies to watch.

GuestMaybe it is because, I remember being a kid and hearing from my teacher that Marco Polo did go to China, that I find it hard to believe that it's possible is a lie.

GuestI'm working on a lesson about Marco Polo's trip to China, to use next year in the unit on China. So far, I'm thinking about having the students complete a map of his travels, then read 2 short documents and participate on a debate about whether he went or not to China.

GuestI think the debate on whether or not Marco Polo had really visited China is the perfect historical lesson to teach students about being critical and judgmental (without the negative connotation). I wouldn't mind telling students that sometimes historians do not agree on what had happened in the past and Marco Polo is the case in point. I think in this case what is important is the process or methodology with which historians used to arrive to their conclusion. Is is this methodology that we should examine more thoroughly with our students rather than just handing down unwarranted facts.

GuestSeen part of 1962 version of Marco Polo. I wasn't too impressed. Historical events are embellished Hollywood style. Its adventurous with Chinese dances, action, and romance. Production was more on amusing rather than on providing factual information. Marco towards the end, rescues the daughter of the emperor from the evil minister. Along the way, Marco Polo encounters Chinese inventions, Silk, spaghetti, gunpowder, etc. Cheesy. I think Ill try the classic 1962 version with Rory Calhoun as Marco Polo. Perhaps the one with 2 stars should have given me a clue on the quality of this film!

GuestIn my class we study the use of primary sources and we also discuss in our explorer units about Marco Polo.. I think using different historical versions and as vngo said above the students came come to their collaborative conclusion and defend it against the other group.

KeymasterAs Dr. Dube was lecturing this past Monday about cinematic portrayals of Marco Polo, I had a flash of memory from my childhood back in the 1970s. Did I really watch a musical about Marco Polo with a boy flying on a kite and a search for giant bird feathers? Was 1970s teen heart throb Desi Arnaz Jr. the star? I pulled out my smart phone and sure enough my memory was real. It only has 2 stars on Imdb, really cheesy stuff.
