An interesting what if: What if someone made a film set in Germany in 1877 that celebrated the German warrior spirit? I think audiences would be aghast at the notion considering how German "warriors" behaved during the first half of the 20th Century.
The topic of how Japan chooses to reflect on its militant past, in particular such episodes as the use of Korean sex slaves and the Rape of Nanking is frequently discussed, in terms of what is and is not included in school text books. Perhaps Hollywood filmmakers have been reading the same texts. There is a Japanese film titled Samurai Rebellion (English title) from 1967 that depicts a family uprising during the Edo period (nothing to do with the historical rebellion depicted in" Last Samurai"). The mood is much bleaker and fatalistic; life in the time of the Samurai was harsh and codes of ethics always contain degrees of subjectivity. I recommend this film as an alternate voice.

    The Last Samurai

The Last Samurai gets two thumbs up for me. I was able to watch is movies with some of my friends who didn’t know I was going to evaluate the move. To my surprise we were all happy and had a good time watching it. Although this is an older movie from 2003 it is still well produce. It could be that one of the maid actors is Tom Cruise and produced by Vincent Ward and directed by Edward Zwick. The story takes place during the time of was in 1877 where a group of people wanted to preserve Japan’s history. This becomes a quest as the emperor a nd his advisor plot a plan to fight against the samurai rebels.
This movie can be view in part to show the importance of preserving ones culture and to what extent some people go to fight for their believes. I would show part of the movie because it is a long movie and I would just want to highlight part of the movie.
