The Pacific Asia Museum offers its web visitors an exciting and dynamic online exhibition that looks at the approaches of Japanese art during the Edo period (1603-1868) through the renderings of animals. By exploring three key approaches: tradition, reality, and imagination, visitors can begin to understand the social and political importance of the Edo period and its influence on today's art forms. Animals in anime and manga art are presented along with scroll paintings and woodblock prints in order to create a cohesive tie uniting the past with the present. The site allows users to view objects at a greater magnification with Zoomify and there is curriculum for use in K-12 classrooms.
