Wow! What a detailed and well-planned lesson. I too am fascinated with China's growing population and the one-child policy and think it's a great lesson plan topic. I like that you incorporate the census and that you have students reflect on what they learned during the class period by filling out a "ticket- out."

Hi Bethany,

This is a great lesson plan. China's "One Child" policy is definitely a topic that should be researched and learned about. As I said before, your lesson is well organized and has lots of detail. I liked the fact that on day 2 in "the creation and interpretation of the population pyramids", you give the websites for the data research. This allows teachers the option to have their students search on line instead of handing them printed information. The "ticket out" is also a god way of keeping students accountable. The only thing that I would add is on day 1, in the "getting started...prompts", I would also ask if they know the population of the U S. (310,300,000) they can compare this to China's population and have an understanding as to why there is a "One Child" policy.

Over all a great lesson!

It is a good idea to have students to come up with a population pyramid with group (zig-zag) and have them present in class and compare the 4 graphs and ask them to draw conclusions (Analytical skills). Probably you can also show students the population pyramid (after they now know how to read the graphs) of Korea and Japan? Have your students to think what these countries will face in the near future to compare with China? Maybe you might start the population of other developing countries and some success French policies along the way, since you teach Human Geography. I might be able to use your idea into my program next year.
