Yes, orthodontics are unusual there. Other than entertainers and famous people, most people don't get braces or otherwise have their teeth straightened. The crooked teeth -- sometimes *very* crooked -- are considered cute. It seems odd for us, considering we live in a world capital of cosmetic procedures, but it's normal there. I've never heard of people needing to pay for it, though!

Well, I had crooked tooth when I was 10ish. My poor mom decided she would take care of them before they are too hard to mend. She took me to the cosmetic dentist very Wednesday and we went through this long and painful journey and had my 4 teeth straightened. Then when everything is done, my female cousins said, " where are your cute teeth?" My mom almost fainted. I was too young to make a decision.

In short, we Asian, at lease Asians I know, tend to believe that leaving everything the way it is given is the best solution. To make your teeth crooked, none heard of in China. Maybe I am away from home too long?

The theory behind this fad is that beauty tends to scare away shy suitors, whereas a less attractive look is more easily approachable. Read more at the following link.[font=Arial] Tokyo dental fad?
