Over the past few years, I have been so burdened about the fate of the North Koreans. Not only are their lives bleak but they are often left in desolate places to try to eek out a living. If you are a christian and are found out, not only will you receive the death penalty but you will be tortured. Don't believe the hype they show to make us think life is wonderful. Even those who are chosen to live in the capital have miserable lives. Their whole existence is to make their their dictator government look good. Now that's pressure.
When I turned the internet on to do this post, an article came up that said, "NKorea says 2 US journalists will stand trial". They are ethnic Koreans but they are Americans. I had heard a little of this. I will turn my attention to the article and may come and do another post.
Please read the attached book review, also by Helie Lee. The reviews of Still Life with Rice and In the Absence of Sun are very brief. I recommend highly that you read them. They are moving because they are about real people and their plights. Still Life With Rice focuses more on Japanese occupation of Korea and the Korean War whereas In the Absence of Sun is the true story of the dramatic rescue of the relatives who were trapped in North Korea.

I agree that the the two journalists are being held as bargaining chips for N. Korea, but I am unclear as to what N. Korea hopes to nenefit from this situation. The country/dictator has become increasingly belligerent and aggressive. It appears as though they are trying to draw either the US or South Korea into some sort of military confrontation. It is difficult for me to understand how China can sit back and allow N. Korea's aggression to go unchecked. If N. Korea is attacked by anyone, China will be directly affected, especially in the area of their common border. The same goes for South Korea. I feel for the people of North Korea who may be dragged into a fight to save face for their leader, and the families of the imprisoned American journalists who are helpless to expedite their release.
