What do you think the response should be from South Korea?

GuestGood question. It seems as thought everyone is one pins and needles and no one wants to provoke N.Korea into doing something foolish.

GuestNothing. This is saber rattling on the part of North Korea. The US cannot be drawn into such an explosive conflict. I would leave this in the hands of the UN.

GuestHi, Moviedo. I agree with your opinion that their conflict should be handled by the UN. I show great concerns about the US intervention, which could be possible to escalate the tension between North and South Korean.

GuestI saw some of the pictures of the actual rockets. They were pretty scary looking. And, as I understand it, it was not just a few rockets, but 200. Does anyone know if there was something that happened immediately before this, that could have provoked it? I thought that it was interesting that we had practice "war games" so to speak, scheduled not too long after this, jointly with the South Koreans. I wonder if any of our students have any friends or family members near or on that Island. Apparently the island in question is kind of in disputed waters.[Edit by="ebeneke on Nov 29, 5:13:53 PM"][/Edit]

GuestHello to everyone who commented on this topic. I also also agree with Mr. Oviedo to let the UN handle this. But, this morning on the 6:00 a.m. news on ABC, there was a segment on the what has happebed over in Korea. It showed a clip and then it showed ships and destroyers out at sea. It didn't say where the ships are posted. I'm sure it is somewhere in range of "help." Well, with that said, it doesn't look good because the USA is having both Korea and China over here for talks. So much for the USA not getting involved.

GuestI think the wild card here is China, North Korea's only real ally. If China would step up to the plate and make it clear that North Korea is on its own, the North would wake up and realize they are in a hopeless, no-win situation and back down. I think South Korea and the U.S. should put pressure on China to "babysit" North Korea and apply the appropriate punishment.

GuestIt appears that North Korea is testing the waters to see how the world will react. The US cannot respond unilaterally. This is an ideal opportunity for the UN to address the situation. I am interested in the language diplomats use in their response.

GuestI agree with the comment about China stepping up to the plate. They are a leading economic power in the world, and with that comes great responsibility. Obviously no country wants to be the ONE who steps up to N Korea, and I strongly agree with the fact that the US should try its best to allow the UN to handle this situation.

GuestIt was so interesting that all of this happened the week my students held a simulation debate in Junior State of America (JSA) on if North Korea invades or threatens South Korea, should the United States intervene. I love that my students can be so forward thinking! So I will have to share with them the information we talked about in class and on this forum!
