KeymasterDear Colleagues,
Here are the logistics of the study tour orientation for this Saturday, April 14 (8:30-8/9PM).
GETTING HERE
Location: The orientation will be held at USC Social Sciences Building (SOS) B-40. The SOS building is located on F4 of the USC map. The stairs to the basement is located OUTSIDE of the SOS building at the Bogardus Courtyard and faces Trousdale Parkway. Click here for driving directions to USC and a campus map.Time: The orientation starts promptly at 8:30 AM in SOS B-40, please be here on time.
Parking: Enter the USC campus at Gate 3, at Figueroa Street. Give the parking attendant your name and ask for a pre-printed parking pass for Parking Structure X (you will need to display this parking pass in your vehicle on Saturday). Parking Structure X is located in G4 of the campus map.
FOOD
On Saturday, we will be providing breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as refreshments throughout the day.WHAT TO BRING
1. $500 in CASH – This is the first part of your nonrefundable deposit.
2. YOUR VALID PASSPORT with at least one blank page – WE WILL HANDLE YOUR CHINESE VISA APPLICATION FOR YOU, so it is necessary for us to have your passport in hand to bring to the Chinese consulate. If we do not receive your passport this weekend, you will have to take care of the visa application yourself. You can request expedited service at the consulate, but extra fees will apply. Click here for additional information.
3. TWO PASSPORT PHOTOS – Costco is a good place to get these done.
4. HARD COPY OF COMPLETED CHINESE VISA APPLICATION – Please download the attached Chinese visa application form and fill in all applicable sections (some information has already been completed for you). It is an interactive .pdf form, so you can type directly in the application. When printing, select “Fit to Printer Margins” in the drop-down “Page Scaling” menu or the application will print as the default 11” x 17” size. Sign and date at the bottom of the application, and bring the original hard copy with you.
WEB DISCUSSION FORUM
You have all been given access to the “2012 NCTA Study Tour to China/Taiwan” web discussion forum. This will be a space in which you can get acquainted, share information and make plans prior to our upcoming orientation weekend. Please check in regularly as I will be posting information relevant to the study tour as it comes. To log in:
1. Go to http://www.uschinaforum.usc.edu/login.aspx.
2. In the login menu on the top upper right corner, enter your username and password, then CLICK THE LOGIN BUTTON (instead of hitting Enter on the keyboard). Most of you already have usernames and passwords from prior seminars, so you will just find the “2012 NCTA Study Tour to China/Taiwan” forum added to your forum list. For those of you who are new to the forum, I will email you your username and password.
3. If you have not already done so, please reply to the “Let’s Get Acquainted” thread with a brief note about yourself.GETTING STUDENTS INVOLVED
As you know, the goal of the NCTA Summer Study Tour is for you to acquire information and experience about East Asia that you can integrate into your curriculum. To this end, we would like you to talk with your students about your upcoming trip and ask them for their impressions and understanding of China and Taiwan. We will share these reflections at the orientation this weekend. At our follow-up meeting in September, it will be interesting to see how these initial impressions will compare with your students’ views after you share your study tour experience following our return.
Please let Xin or I know if you have any questions and we would happy to address them for you.
All the best,
Yingjia Huang
