In North Korea, women are becoming the main breadwinners because of unemployment among men. This makes sense I guess, until you hear the part that tells you that men who do not work because there is no work for them to do must pay the factory for the privilege of not getting a pay check. What kind of twisted logic is that? Ok it is official North Korea has the most awful government on earth. Let me get this straight, the government fails to provide work for their people or give them rations to live on, but they are ok with compelling their already starving populace to pay the government for not working. Of course, they can’t protest this because they will be imprisoned. Sounds like the novel 1984.
The only positive I can see is this undermines the patriarchal structure that has existed in North Korea for centuries and gives women more power in the home, but at what price? The emasculation of males, an increase in domestic violence and the deterioration of the North Korean family. Add to this the fact that women must pay bribes to participate underground economy that helps maintain half of the families in North Korea. There is link below.
