It was a delight to have Professor Ye lecture at our forum on Tuesday. He is so knowlegeable on the periods of Chinese history. Interwoven were the arts of painting, calligraphy and poetry. I have observed the pride Chinese take in these things but this forum helped me have an understanding of the significance to them. In China they shared about paintngs, told me of their poets (Ivisited the home of DuFu) and watched students practice calligraphy with a brush and water on pavement. I was amazed that such effort went into the practice that would soon evaporate. I was interested as Professor Ye explained a little of the spread of Buddhism, which was started by an Indian and turned into "Chinese flavor". I don't know much about the tenets of Buddhism but was surprised how fast it spread. I had read a book that featured Chinese Leaders. In his lifetime, Confucius's teachings had a small following but they permeated China and Korea (and Japan?) even to today. Is this mindset what made Buddhism so easy to accept? Professor Ye's demonstration on the beauty of the poetry was very nice. The whole time was interesting. I was interested how Professor Ye tried to put a "Chnese flavor" on Jesus Christ. That was the only thing that didn't fit. Jesus Christ is above time and culture. Read the Bible.
