The teaching of the Indonesian language in the Australian Education system is considered important as Indonesian is out nearest neighbour and it is necessry to have an understanding of Indonesia, its people and its language. However the number of students in high school who are electing to learn the Indonesian language is declining.

Does anyone have any ideas how as educators we can promote an interest in Indonesia and consequently promote the learning of the Indonesian language.

There's nothing like visuals and sounds to grab the attention of our students. I would suggest introducing students to Indonesia by showing them video of gamelan music and dance. For most students (and teachers) it will seem otherworldly, yet beautiful. Try to gain a basic knowledge of what's going on beforehand (e.g., traditional stories being told, or explanation of the interlocking rhythms), and let them know that a very unique world is theirs for the study.
An aside: I was fortunate to have spent four weeks in Bali last summer, and a more beautiful culture and people would be hard to find.

Thanks eshorer for your suggestions, I will take them up. I was on a university exchange to a uni in Yogyakarta last year so I have a few resources and stories from that which I can utilise. If u ever get the opportunity to visit Indonesia again I would recommend a trip to Yogyakarta, in central Java, which is steeped in history. Also a must do is visit the Buddhist temple of Borobudur and the Hindu temple of Prambanan (although has suffered some damage from the recent earthquake) which are in the vicintiy of Yogyakarta.
