I was checking out this article dated May 6, 2006 in the Asia Pacific Arts and a few things caught my attention. One was the anime. I feel anime is a great way to get our students interested in Asian culture. Growing up in Mexico I watched a lot of Japanese animation and to this day I still remember flying (make-believe of course!) around the school yard thinking I was Ultraman. What better way to get our students to look at reoccuring themes in these animated films. One can learn so much about a culture from their heroes. Has anyone thought of using anime comic books to entice students to read? One year I had students create a civilization. To my surprise students who were usually turned off had a great time bringing aspects of anime and video game worlds into their civilization. I suppose all that time in other make-believe worlds gave them background knowledge, many not exposed to anime and video games did not have. The other attention getter was the racism aspect. I was wondering if Asians are racist against each other. I still remember being in San Francisco at a Chinese restaurant where our service was extremely slow due to, my Japanese-American and Korean-American friends believed, racism toward them. Is there much interaction across Asian races in Los Angeles or do they lean more toward separate but equal? It would be nice to get some feed back.[Edit by="aaguilar on Jul 23, 4:26:52 PM"][/Edit]
