Mr. Pan's book points out the significance of Mao's land reform system just after the establishment of the PRC. Vanguard revolutionaries were sent to travel through the countryside to "....dismantle the unequal system of land ownership, abusive rents, an high taxes..." that had oppressed China's rural populations for hundreds of years. By the time I was born in upstate New York just seven years after World War II, some tow million landlords had been tortured, humiliated, and put to death, effectively ending the landlord class that in Pan's estimation "...hand dominated rural society since the Han Dynasty. Small farmers for the first time in China's long history were given small parcels of arable land. Women for the first time could own a small plot of land. In this way the Communist Party proved itself to be a force to be reckoned with, creating both fear and a small measure of economic improvement at the same time.

    Hi Colleagues,

I have attached the readings for Cosmopolitan East Asia or Many Chinas below. Professor Yang Ye from UC Riverside will be joining us at UTLA on 11/6 to lecture on "Many Chinas," which is one of China's richest eras in history.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,
    Yingjia
