Readings for unit on "The Meji Restoration"

It was facinating for me to be going through the readings for this particular unit. As interesting as the older periods of history are, it is facinating to me to read first hand accounts of how things were changing within the country as it came into greater contact with the western world. In particular I didn't realize that there was such a great concern with the poverty of people in the provinces--the internal struggles are an aspect that is usually overlooked in Western textbooks.
