I was recently looking at a few articles dealing with Kublai Khan. In class we discussed how Khan was an activist ruler during the heyday of the Silk Road. What I did not realize was that Khan's fleets failed twice in attempts to invade and conquer Japan. Rushed preparation and bad weather may have been the deciding factors in these failed invasions, but I can't help but wonder what impact this had on the self-esteem and psyche of the Japanese. Khan ruled a vast empire and the Japanese must have felt invincible after these two failed attempts.
