I briefly studied about Sun Yat Sen in one of my college history courses, and more so as I have taught 10th grade World History. I first became familiar with Sun-Yat Sen and his background because there was a building dedicated to him on the St. John's University Campus. As a freshman at the university it just looked like an out of place building that resembled a Chinese restaurant. As I became more immersed in the university culture and had meetings in the building, I learned more about Sun Yat Sen and his contributions to China. The building is home to the Asian Studies Institute on campus.

That's funny. I remeber years ago when people were speculating about hopefuls for a presidential election and Arnold Schwarzenegger's name came up and they said, No way he's Austrian.

I got a chuckle out of the revelation at our March 27 seminar that Barack Obama and Sun Yat-sen both attended the same prep school, Punahou School, in Hawaii. I chuckled because people say neither man was qualified to lead their country because of questions surrounding their true birthplace. Sun Yat-sen is alleged to have a certificate of live birth (which is slightly different from a birth certificate) in Hawaii and Obama is alleged to have been a citizen of Indonesia (and not the United States) at one point in his life. Ironically, Obama's challenger in the 2008 election, John McCain, was born in the Panama Canal Zone (PCZ) and many have questioned his citizenship as well. The PCZ was a U.S. territory at the time, but it is unclear whether that automatically qualifies McCain as being a "natural born citizen." No one ever mentions the fact that neither George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, or Andrew Jackson were "natural born citizens" of the United States. They were all born as British citizens on American soil (remember, we were just a colony of Great Britain). Oh, and did I mention that many of these presidents were the so-called Founders of this nation and authors of the Constitution. Either they were claiming some sort of executive exemption from the "natural born citizen" clause, or perhaps there is some wiggle room that might apply to them and Obama.
