My paternal grandmother had bound feet. I recall my mother telling me about the time when she was trying to get away during one of the invasions and how she had difficulty running away. She would have to take frequent breaks due to her bound feet.

One thing I learned from the lecture was the fact that cotton originated in India. I also learned more about the various "unequal treaties" that were signed between China and various Western countries. I can clearly understand the Chinese perspective as to why they would call it the "Century of Humiliation". The final shocking tidbit that I learned from Clay this week was the concept of "extraterritorial". I couldn't believe that Americans and Europeans could only be prosecuted by the country they came from. This could be compared to today's law of diplomatic immunity.

I was also fascinated by the conversation on foot binding. I think this is a topic that my students would find interesting, and which can lead us to discuss the procedures so many women in our society undergo in order to look more "beautiful". As educators, I think it is critical that we discuss these issues with our students.
