If the goal of the Saturday session was to inspire us to teach the material and use some of the ideas presented, then the target was achieved! I thought I had already posted on this topic, but I am glad to do so again. I thoroughly enjoyed the material, the video clips, as well as the methods and yummy food. I even went so far as to persuade my wife to join us so that she could learn some things too. Clay is a pleasure to have as an instructor. I wish most of my professors had the passion and charisma that he exhibits when he teaches. His way of storytelling is amazing. I very much enjoyed the debate. I plan on using the idea I'm my class, even with different social studies subjects. Thank you very much for the opportunity to participate.

I think after the last couple of sessions, I realize that I had mistaken the Communist Party with the Nationalist Party. I always thought they were synonymous.

It just dawned on me just now that during our debate, the group that was able to effectively communicate their philosophy appeared to be stronger and more assertive. People usually determine what they believe is the right answer by evaluating the ability of others to persuade through speech and reasoning. So, I realized that no matter how great or virtuous many of these philosophers from the olden days were, it really depended on the person who was conveying the message. You may have a great product, but if you don't advertise effectively, you won't sell. A lot of people strongly opposed the Legalist views, however, the arguments of that team were so convincing that it was difficult to disagree (Yes, I'm biased. I was in that group =P). We can really relay this message by focusing on the power of an author's use of voice and the power of persuasion. Students can read about the 4 schools of thought and find evidence of effective voice. How could you (student) "sell" your school of thought. What would you have added or changed to the original teachers of the school of thought.
