    I missed this session because of the election, but it sounds very interesting. I too am fascinated by the Chinese language--one written language, many spoken languages. It's so different from our situation with an alphabet. Then the fact that it spread to Japan and Korea as well is awesome. Maybe it's enough to explain the incredible durability of the language by pointing to the mountains, seas, and deserts that surround China, but I think there must be something about the system of characters that allows for endless flexibility to adapt to new conditions and situations. I wish I had been there for the chanting and singing since it sounds so interesting. I am also always struck by the co-existence in China of multiple religious traditions. It's such a contrast with the European tradition of Christianity only.
