I'll be incorporating knowledge from the trip in many lessons in my Asia, geography, and current events units. My main project, though, is on the poet Du Fu, whose house we visited in Chengdu. We will talk about him in the course of the 7th grade medieval China unit. We'll look at the geography -- where is Chengdu in China? We'll do an overview of the city (including pandas), and we'll read some of his poems. I had read a poem or two of his with classes before, but I didn't know anything about his life and was struck by the power of his life story. We will look at some of the class divide issues raised by his poems, and the students will write poems of their own.

I can't come until after work on Saturday, but I'm really excited to see everyone!

    Hi Folks,

One of the requirements for participation on the study tour was completion of a curriculum unit. Below are the expectations for your unit. They are similar to those you had to meet for the seminar. Please note that you MUST utilize knowledge and materials acquired during the study tour, though you'll probably draw on other resources as well.

Please take a moment to reply to this message to indicate what you think you'll be doing. You'll present your unit at our follow-up workshop later this fall. You'll be expected to post the final unit in the lesson plans forum.

    ************************************
Design a series of lessons to be used in one of the courses you teach. This multi-lesson plan should cover at least four days of instruction. You are encouraged, but not required, to create lessons that will help your students meet the California educational standards. You are also encouraged to incorporate the Internet into your lessons, either in the research assigned, activities employed, or presentation of conclusions.

Your multi-lesson curriculum project should include the following components:

    1. A rationale for the proposed unit
Explain how and where the unit fits into your course. What skills and/or content will your students have prior to the unit and what will they be ready to tackle?

    2. Skill and content objectives
Refer to the CA and NCHS world history standards or the California educational standards and identify which of these is addressed by your lesson plans.

    3. Detailed lesson plan
Include specific lesson objectives, class and individual activities, and materials to be used. Provide discussion-launching questions, questions to guide reading, and other procedural tips. Include copies of textbook readings, draft handouts, or other materials. Be sure to provide complete citations for the materials you include. There are a wide variety of teaching guides you may consult for activity suggestions, and many primary source materials are available from the USCI website and elsewhere on the web.

You are encouraged to use music, film, and the web as part of your lessons. Also consider whether your location and budget might permit class trips to museums, temples, or ethnic commercial districts into your unit (don't neglect the possibility of virtual trips to museums and other sites).

    4. A plan for assessing student achievement
Describe culminating activities, projects, or other tasks which will permit students to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired.

    Optional
Discuss possible extracurricular extensions of this unit (e.g., Model UN, world music club, film club).
Also – please document your efforts to transmit some of what you learned on the tour to other teachers. (E.g, department meeting presentation, school presentation, something for the PTA, presentation at a professional meeting, sharing with colleagues)
