I really enjoyed the presentation as well! This was very relaxing and I can understand how students are in awe when they have this presentation. All aspects of it are so detail and they have deep meaning.
I thought the ladies did I a wonderful job! I think this would be a great addition to my class to help calm and focus my students. The two presenters were really passionate about their program and I can't wait for them to expand to other parts of the district. Rituals are very comforting and can help create balance and calm in such a chaotic environment(my classroom at times). I will try to implement the relaxing music after lunch.
There seemed to be a few similarities between the Chinese Tea Ceremony, Japanese Tea Ceremony, and Ethiopian Tea Ceremony. All of these Tea ceremonies resonate one truth, it keeps their culture relevant in an ever-changing world, and it becomes an event where all within the community are welcome. Case in point, an Ethiopian family invited me to enjoy some authentic Ethiopian tea. I gladly accepted only to discover that the Ethiopian Tea Ceremony takes two to three hours to complete. Why? It serves as an expression of welcoming outsiders (i.e., non-ethiopians) into their community. From my point of view, Mrs. Chan's presentation of the Chinese Tea Ceremony was her way of inviting us into the Chinese culture.
I will be adding the flower arranging this year. I already am doing the watercolors and calligraphy. I like the boxes as well as a beginning of the year exercise like an all about me activity.
This was an amazing experience. I really enjoyed the entire process and think that students of any age can enjoy and learn to appreciate different cultures. The tea experience was a great segue into the tea ceremony that I experienced while in China. There is a particular process for everything. I tasted many tea samples and learned about the different tastes. There was one tea that when pour on a glass, opens up into a beautiful flower. All in all, I really enjoyed The Road to Chinese Garden.
I will create a meditation time for my students. There is an urban garden in my school, I think my students would benefit from sitting quietly in the garden meditating.
These wonderful ladies shared a little bit of Chinese cultural rituals. It was a pleasure to watch the ritual performed by Mrs. Chan. Watching the video about the demonstration with the forth graders was great. They were so into the demonstration that no one was out of task. They were so into the ritual. Also, I liked how the children decorated their boxes and made it their own. I would like to bring this program to my school. My students would benefit from this presentation greatly. My school's is so far away from China Town. I don't think that my students even think about anyone else's culture. Carson is too far from the Huntington Library that Mrs. Zee and Mrs. Chan would not like to take that trip to Carson.
