I am putting out the following as a cry for help.
Tomorrow I will be starting our section on Three Chinese Philosophies (Confucionism, Daoism & Legalism). I have been trying to think of a final project once we cover the three philosophies but have not been able to do so. I would like to do something similar to our activity but due to time constraints I am unable to.
I wanted to put this out there to see if anyone might be able to share ideas.
Thanks!
~Art-related~
I had my 7th graders create art pieces and written description of said art (mock museum pieces). One stipulation was that they had to incorporate the influences of the philosophies in the art. They had fun with that one.
Another idea could be brochures. At a time when the states are warring and stability is need, why not create brochures that will serve to convince citizens which philosophy is the best to follow? The students can fold the sheet into 3 or 6 sections and write about the founders, followers, main ideas, and how society would benefit from the philosophy. They might include a 'con' section on the other 2 philosophies. Or the students will complete 1 brochure for each philosophy.
Advertisment for the philosophies could be fun to make, as well. They can create bumper stickers, billboard ads, poster, etc.
I'm not sure what your schedule is, but the school of thoughts simulation we had in class was pretty cool. If the students covered everything already, they just need to highlight the main points and be ready to debate.
Good luck!
My independent studies middle school students sometimes make brochures on various topics. I think this is a great way to release the inate creativily we all have laying dormant just beneth the surface just dying to come out and interface with the world...
Thanks for the replies.
I decided to create a project along the lines of brochures as a way of advertisement for an upcoming election. I assigned my students a school of thought and have asked them to create a brochure in which they must create a cover (picture), explain the school of thought they were assigned, explain the positive things of it and then explain the negative/fall backs of the other three school of thoughts. Ultimately their goal is to convince people to vote for their school of thought. They had a couple of days to work on it. We first started with an explanation of each one followed by brainstorming ideas (positives & negatives of each) then projecting those ideas onto their brochures.
This morning they have turned in their finished products and I must say I am impressed.
Thanks to those who collaborated.
