KeymasterWelcome to the East Asia Seminar!
In this section, I will post announcements and handouts from the seminar.
You have access to 2 forums:
1. Spring 2007 UTLA East Asia Seminar - Please use this forum to introduce yourselves to fellow classmates and discuss issues raised in this class and your small group assignments.
2. Asia in My Classroom - Please use this forum to discuss a wide variety of issues and to post your film review assignment and comments about East Asia-focused websites. This site is open to all teachers who have participated/are participating in the East Asia seminar at our different locations, so this is a wonderful opportunity to share information and ideas.
I have attached the guide on how to use the web discussion forum.

GuestUSC Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
Here is information about CEUs from the USC School of Continuing Education:
Each CEU is $50. The total is $300 for all 6 units.
They only issue the type of CEUs that are equitable to 10 hours of contact time, including homework, per CEU. These are not graduate units so the idea of semester or quarter doesn’t translate to these. You need 3 CEUs to equal 1 salary point.
I will provide a form for you to fill out towards the end of our course if you are interested in obtaining CEUs.

GuestClarification on missed sessions
If you miss a Tuesday session, you need to complete one makeup assignment.
If you miss a Saturday session, you need to complete two makeup assignments.
For your missed session(s), you can attend the corresponding session at our San Fernando Valley location for your own benefit. However, you will still need to complete the makeup assignment(s).
The assignments can be posted in the Asia in My Classroom web forum section. Because you will miss the in-class discussion with your own group, we want you to share your experiences from the museum or lecture as your contribution.
All assignments are due on July 31, 2007.
If you know you will miss a session, please email me with the date. Also, please let me know if you want to attend the corresponding session at our other location and I will give you the date.

GuestAfter contacting a LAUSD salary point representative, LAUSD teachers can receive only 2 salary points from our seminar.
If all the requirements are completed, you will 2 salary points for free. Each USC CEU is $50, and you can get up to 6 CEUs for $300. Again, these are not college credit units.
If you get the 2 salary points for free, you cannot apply the USC CEUs for additional salary points from LAUSD.
The USC CEUs are beneficial if want a more official record of taking our seminar. If you switch school districts, you may be able to apply them for points in the new district.

GuestThe USC School of Continuing Education has dropped the CEU pricing in half. It was originally $300 for 6 units.
Now you can purchase 6 units for $150!
If you are interested in purchasing CEUs, I will bring forms to our next session for you to fill out. I will have to verify completion of your assignments before the paperwork is submitted.

GuestFor those who have not received enough East Asia in their intellectual diet, I suggest you contact [email protected] or http://www.KoreaAcdemy.org The class will begin on August 6 and run through August 10 at the Korean Cultural Center. It is sponsored by the newly established Korean Academy for Educators. The seminar is free to educators , multicultuaal credits are available, and the opportunity to travel to Korea or East Asia. Have we heard this before? More information is found in the June 15 edition of "United Teacher". http://www.utla.net
So if Clay runs a bias against our cohort when it comes to our 2008 East Asia plans, we can always jump ship and try our luck for an East Asian trip with the Korea Academy. [Edit by="jcsmyth on Jun 22, 4:27:55 PM"][/Edit] -
