Welcome to the East Asia Seminar!
In this section, I will post announcements and handouts from the seminar.
You have access to 2 forums:
1. Spring 2007 San Fernando Valley East Asia Seminar - Please use this forum to introduce yourselves to fellow classmates and discuss issues raised in this class and your small group assignments.
2. Asia in My Classroom - Please use this forum to discuss a wide variety of issues and to post your film review assignment and comments about East Asia-focused websites. This site is open to all teachers who have participated/are participating in the East Asia seminar at our different locations, so this is a wonderful opportunity to share information and ideas.
I have attached the guide on how to use the web discussion forum.
Seminar Requirements
I have attached a revised seminar requirements document.
Under the first requirement, I added a line to clarify about missing a Saturday session. If you miss a Saturday session, you will need to complete two makeup assignments.
Seminar Schedule
I have attached our seminar schedule.
Please remember to email me if you need to miss a session. You will be responsible for the makeup assignment listed in our requirements.
USC Continuing Education Units (CEUs)
I contacted the USC School of Continuing Education to get more information about the CEUs.
Each CEU is $50. The total is $300 for all 6 units.
They only issue the type of CEUs that are equitable to 10 hours of contact time, including homework, per CEU. These are not graduate units so the idea of semester or quarter doesn’t translate to these. You need 3 CEUs to equal 1 salary point.
I will provide a form for you to fill out at the end of our course if you are interested in obtaining CEUs because I have to verify that you have completed all seminar requirements.
Clarification on missed sessions
If you miss a Tuesday session, you need to complete one makeup assignment.
If you miss a Saturday session, you need to complete two makeup assignments.
For your missed session(s), you can attend the corresponding session at our UTLA location for your own benefit. However, you will still need to complete the makeup assignment(s).
The assignments can be posted in the Asia in My Classroom web forum section. Because you will miss the in-class discussion with your own group, we want you to share your experiences from the museum or lecture as your contribution.
All assignments are due on July 31, 2007.
If you know you will miss a session, please email me with the date. Also, please let me know if you want to attend the corresponding session at our other location and I will give you the date.
I have attached the handout from Clay on China's Major Philosophical Traditions.
Work with your group via email/web forum for the debate.

b. Know the flaws of the other schools of thought

I have attached the participant list with email addresses.
After contacting a LAUSD salary point representative, LAUSD teachers cannot receive more than 2 salary points from our seminar.
If all the requirements are completed, you will 2 salary points for free. Each USC CEU is $50, and you can get up to 6 CEUs for $300. Again, these are not college credit units.
If you get the 2 salary points for free, you cannot apply the USC CEUs for additional salary points from LAUSD.
The USC CEUs are beneficial if want a more official record of taking our seminar. If you switch school districts, you may be able to apply them for points in the new district.
Here is the Creating Web Pages with Mozilla Composer handout.
We encourage you to attend our two upcoming workshops on film and culture in East Asia at USC.

We have great speakers and sessions and free lunch!
If you've missed/will miss a Saturday seminar session, these workshops are an excellent option for a makeup assignment.
All teachers from any Los Angeles County school district can attend our workshops. Please encourage your colleagues to attend.
The USC School of Continuing Education has dropped the CEU pricing in half for our seminar. It was originally $300 for 6 units.
Now you can purchase 6 units for $150!
If you are interested in purchasing CEUs, I will bring forms to our next session for you to fill out. I will have to verify completion of your assignments before the paperwork is submitted.
If you are interested in purchasing units, I need this form by July 31st.
