GuestYes, I can not help, I still thinking about the today debate experience, I spend a lot of time to learn about the four school of thoughts during the weekend, even though I do not have deep understanding about the subjects, but the learning process of self study plus the real time face to face debate, it forced you locate the relevant information/knowledge from your brain, put it into the way that you can express yourself to the point at that very moment, that was challenge, but I did it, I enjoyed it very much, thanks Prof. Dube., I definitely will apply this method of learning in to our class room.

GuestI felt pretty bad missing today's seminar and especially the debate. Being able to bring sandwiches for everyone makes me feel a little better

GuestI enjoyed the opportunity to apply our knowledge. However, I was not prepared to be grilled by the "THE MASTER" "主"aka, Clay Dube. My initial plan was to come out swinging, confront the other philosophies, then sit back and let them all argue with each other. But 主 had another idea, he moderated the discussion. He questioned each of us with laser vision. Those peirceing eyes, once he focused on you then you were done for. I will never see the Socratic method the same again.

GuestThank you, Ying, for the sandwiches. I was soooo tired that after my nap, having the sandwich there for my dinner was great. Thank you! You are very thoughtful. Dylis

GuestI, too, enjoyed the debate, but I definitely had a level of anxiety (nothing unusual for me!). The chart pages in our notes were valuable for organizing information; something I would use with my 6th & 7th graders. I felt that Professor Dube was having us take our knowledge and apply it to situations that would have likely happened during the Warring States Period (higher level thinking on Bloom's taxonomy). I can see myself trying this with my 6th graders as we cover the 3 philosophies. There is a lesson in my favorite supplementary textbook (Teachers Curriculum Institute - History Alive) that has the students complete a processing activity with their parents. They must explain the 3 philosophies to a parent and determine which one best describes the family's view and follow-through on homework. An interesting read.

GuestTalking about to be grilled by the "MASTER", it reminded me what my professor said during one of the teaching methods class. He said that the most difficult part for students to learn the content material is not by giving the correct answers, but through drawing out the correct answers from students by asking the right questions. Today, I saw the demonstration on how to draw out the correct answers by asking the right questions.

GuestI echo the sentiments of my classmates. Because I did not have a deep understanding of the four philosophies, I also spent much of the week end learning the similarities and differences of each of them. Because I was so prepared, the debate seemed easy. Often my students want detailed instructions and study guides for every assignment. Clear instructions are important but sometimes students just need to dig for knowledge. Now that the debate is over, I appreciate that I have an understanding of the philosophies that I would not have acquired without the pressure of the debate.

KeymasterFun event, once we got past the "test anxiety" it was an engaging event. Kudo's to Dr Dube for how he moderated the debate.
Spent about an hour in preparation this weekend reading and reviewing multiple sources. Time well spent, including the look from my incredulous wife "you're studying Confucianism?" I agree that there is good opportunity to use this format in our classes; wondering if I'll get calls from irate parents about teaching "eastern religions."

GuestI thought Professor Dube did an excellent job of moderating our debate. I wish now I had a recording of it because his questions really made us think. Did anyone record it? Working together in our small groups allowed me to get to know some really great people: Arana, Marlyn, and Wayne.
