GuestSo I found the Chinese Philosophy packet to be overwhelming! I read the section on Confucius many times, as that was going to be my debate topic. I like the idea that rituals are "a means of satisfaction" and that music is one way to have this satisfaction. Then, incorporating music as one of the rituals was inspiring to me. I also agree that music and family are key to a fulfilling life. In regards to education, I also agree with this philosophy that DOING is better than understanding, seeing, hearing, and not hearing. I try to instill this in my students, especially as we move to common core standards and 21st century skills.

GuestI found it quite interesting that Confucian teachings were not successful until the centuries beyond his death. In a sense, this is similar to Jesus and his followers. Christianity did not hit its peak while Jesus was around. The same can be said for many artists whose works go unnoticed until after their death.
On another note, I was taken aback to learn about another key philosophy/religion called Mohism and Legalism. I had heard about Daoism and the teaching of Confucius. The readings definitely enlightened me to new horizons.

GuestThere are so many great points made from each of the school of thoughts. What I find hypocritical is that there is a great deal of judgement of right and wrong. This dichotomy creates a rift, straying away from the purpose of the philosophies, which is to create a strong country and decent human beings. There is so much to learn from each school, but I understand that people need to be told what is right from wrong, which school of thought is the right way to live. To me, this just completely goes against the process of learning and choosing what works for you as an individual. This also reminds me of how we teach today. We're trying to venture into common core and 21st century skills. If we stick to a prescribed way of teaching, we are doing our children injustice. Effective government is learning how to adjust to the needs of the people and times, just like modifying your lessons ensure that each child reaches his/her optimal level of learning. Otherwise, we are just producing drones that follow those in power.

GuestKorea used to be Koguryo which took up majority of Korea. Baikje, Gaya, and Silla are the other regions. 1905 Korea became colony of Japan. Since1895 Japan had Taiwan for 50 years. 1950 North Korea invades the South. 3 million killed in 3 year Korean War. Korea has 2x the amount of ppl as CA.
Looking back at my notes from 10/08, I am curious as to know why Taiwanese people do not harbor any resentment toward the Japanese, while S. Korea and China did. Any thoughts?

Guest@lchang- I know that the people who are indigenous to Formosa still harbor resentment towards the Chinese who currently occupy the island nation. They feel that it is rightfully theirs. If I recall correctly, there are more indigenous people in the central and southern portions of the island.
