I found both of these documents to be tremendously valuable. I plan to develop my curriculum unit (for this seminar) around the imperialism period and I think both of these documents will be useful. The first is a manifesto by the nobility of the city, declaring that they will not stand for the British merchant invasion of sorts and that each household will block the way to prevent "barbarians" from entering the city. The treaty also seems useful because it shows the clearly one-sided terms dictated by Britain--including a tremendous amount of cash as well as access to five cities. I would like a good secondary source on the Opium Wars that preceded these documents.

    Hi Colleagues,

Please see attached for the readings (four parts total) on 19th Century China. After the debate on Saturday, Clay will be starting a discussion on China during this volatile period leading to the fall of the Qing Dynasty and China's first republic.

    Best,

I'm interested knowing more about this. As someone who has not studied this at all, the articles were a bit confusing to me. Hopefully, a lot of this will be clarified for me in tonight's session. I'm interested in knowing more about the background issues of these articles.
