Last night's class was outstanding. I really enjoyed learning about the first half of the "century of humiliation." It was nice to see that at least one positive came from exposure to the west: an end to foot binding. It was also interesting and exciting to learn that several of China's intellectuals were Western educated. Sun Yat-Sun even went to the same high school (Punahoe) as Barack Obama! This shows how small the world was becoming at the turn of the 20th century.

This class inspires me to read news articles about countries I haven't focused on in the past. With new insights from the our class, the messages "between the lines" of newsprint have become clearer to me.

Today (3/29/12) the LA Times reports that the beautiful, Burmese, Buddhist "velvet revolutionary" leader Aung San Suu Kyi may be "Asia's Nelson Mandela/Vaclav Havel". She is poised to get an influencial position in the military-dominated government. An inspirational figure, she has survived decades of imprisionment, and hopefully, now released can continue leading her democracy-seeking movement.

Her saga connects to our class, as she and her movement "risk the wrath of China", Burma's would be big-brother. We've been examining China's slew of revolutions . . . unfolding slowly may be another one in Asia, led by a woman.

Due to this class, I am developing an awareness of China and all of Asia. I am learning that China will have a larger and better equipped military than the US by 2015 if things continue as they are. I am learning that while other countries do not like the imposing military might rising over them, there is not much they can do without assistance. Unfortunately, the US is experiencing our own melt down of sorts and may not be able to assist as much as we would have liked. Also, Russia, China, Japan, Iran, and India are also trading with gold as opposed to the American dollar so our money will likely continue to lose value. Other alliances are troubling too. Ties with Darfur Sudan, Zimbabwe and Burma point to human rights violations that go unchecked. All this, plus the technological advantages China is now achieving together with the knowledge that their hackers have infiltrated the US Chamber of Commerce’s computer systems in the past paint America in a pretty dim light when compared to China. I am also getting the impression that while there is much disunity among the Asian countries at present, unity may be a byproduct of the many world developments as they unfold.
