I just watched a lecture posted by USC US-China Institute where Shelley Riggers talks about her new book Why Taiwan Matters: Small Island Global Powerhouse. In her lecture, she discusses several reasons why Taiwan has a unique and successful history. One reason why Taiwan matters is that its history is both an economic and political success story. Economically Taiwan has made huge successes and is a marketplace for the distribution of the latest technology; and politically she explains Taiwan is a Democratic miracle. Taiwan moved from a one party dictatorship to a democracy with very little conflict. (This is very unique considering what is happening in the world today with countries such as Egypt and Libya.) She also explains that Taiwan is very Chinese in culture but also has a local culture that is unique to the island. It has its own music, arts, and history. I would like to further explore the culture of Taiwan and its relations with mainland China.

Thank you for sharing! I would like to learn more too!

As a matter of fact, "Taiwan is very Chinese in culture but also has a local culture that is unique to the island. It has its own music, arts, and history", if you go to China, this statement applies to all the cities you visit. My hometown Suzhou has its own music, arts and history. The Kun opera started in Suzhou is the mother of Beijing opera.
