Sijo

Specific Learning Objectives:
Students will learn to how to create Sijo with Chinese characters.
(Elementary level Mandarin immersion curriculum. No CA standards)

Class lecture:
Teacher read several Sijos to students.
The spring breeze melted snow on the hills then quickly disappeared.
I wish I could borrow it briefly to blow over my hair
And melt away the aging frost forming now about my ears.

You ask how many friends I have? Water and stone, bamboo and pine.
The moon rising over the eastern hill is a joyful comrade.
Besides these five companions, what other pleasure should I ask?

Teacher asks students to discuss in their groups about the characteristics of Sijo. Teacher leads the whole class discusses the characteristics, and summarizes on a chart. If students missed any, teacher should introduce the characteristics and add on the chart.
Every line 14-16 syllables
44-46 syllables in total
Break in every line
Line 1: introduce a situation
Line 2: development
Line 3: twist and conclusion

With the chart created, teacher leads the whole class to develop a Sijo in Mandarin together, and compare with the examples.

Students create their own Mandarin Sijos in pairs. Teacher can walk around and help.

Students share their Sijos with the whole class, and a discussion follows every Sijo.

Assessments: Students create their own Mandarin Sijo individually.
