GuestI like the idea, Aileen! If I may throw some ideas into the mix, here are some smaller items that could make perfect gifts. When I visited Korea a few years ago, I took a small reserve of pens, pencils, and notepads from the 99 Cent Only Stores. They have a nice selection of items containing the logos of Los Angeles sports teams such as the Lakers and Dodgers. These items are small, light, relatively inexpensive, easy to carry, and are emblazoned with names that are popular the world over. The kids loved them! I also went to my university's alumni center and asked them for any UCLA items that they were willing to donate. (The alumni center was quite generous and supplied me with a bagful of pens, buttons, stickers, etc.) Memorabilia from our schools also make great gifts!

GuestVery good ideas! <99 cent store, student-made post cards
Additionally, I contacted LA Lakers Donations. I filled out their Donation Request form online explained our purpose of this trip by K12 teachers. I also mentioned that we, 14 K12 teachers could share their small items...keep your fingers crossed to get enough items from Lakers so all of us could benefit from this. If I hear anything from them, I will definitely post any news here. When you have time, we can contact all the those places like UCLA, Dogers, and NFL football teams?

GuestI like the idea of asking for donations too. I was thinking of contacting the chamber of commerce here to see if they would be willing to donate money or goods that have the city's name on them. Not quite as cool as the Dodgers, I know....

SpectatorGreat ideas -- Harue, thanks for thinking about the Lakers. There are other teams as well! Many teachers have approached school booster organizations for a small stipend for such items or to purchase things for the classroom.

GuestI contacted the Dodgers this morning and got a very positive reply within a few hours. They said they would ship me an assortment of small items to give away on the trip! I can't wait to see what is included! I'll keep you posted. Great idea to contact athletic organizations!!!

GuestI am fortunate to have a world history teacher who requires her students participate in a service project each semester. she has offered to brainstorm with me regarding her students making some gift items for me to take. postcard size notes with southern california and glendale specific logos and info on them with a little somewhat generic personal note are high on the list.
how many do i need? 15? 30? 45? 60?May 4, 2012 at 9:18 am #22320Anonymous
GuestI sent some emails to skateboard/surfing/snowboard companies asking for memorabilia that represent sunny California. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

GuestHooray, the Longboard Store indicated that they'll be sending me stickers. Hopefully, it's not just of their logo. They wanted to know how many and I didn't know what to tell them. Do we know how many kids are in each class?

GuestThe Dodgers sent rubber bracelets, pencils, stickers, and baseball cards. My students have decided to make friendship bracelets, too. Almost every seventh grader was making them at lunch today. Very cool!

GuestSome of my students made key chains and wrote a letter to go along with it. Hopefully, the students can read English or someone can help them! I really would like to know how man students we should expect. I'll bring some other items to hopefully have enough for all the kids.

GuestSo, our school's life skills teacher got a bunch of stickers and lip balms free from Izze. I am not sure how she worked this magic, but she gave them to me for gifts to give out in China. So, in addition to the aforementioned Dodger goodies and the 500 or so friendship bracelets my sevies have cranked out over the last month, we now have these items. Life is good.
