Students' thoughts on China

KeymasterClay had asked us to talk with our students about China. I thought it would be nice to share what our students have to say. Here are my 6th grade shletered students' responses in their words.
They use fans on their face.
There is a silk road.
They have very little corn. (showed about 3 inches with fingers)
They have a Yin Yang for some sort of balance. (drew an acurate picture)
They make most of the things we have.
They have a Great Wall.
They have a celebration with dancing and a dragon. This is for NYE.
Red is for good luck.
They don't have toilets.
Enemies are burried in the Great Wall.
They don't like cows.
Chinese New Year is different from ours.
They like ducks.
Noodles come from China.
They don't like cheese.
They drink soy milk.
They have the Chinese zodiacs. (like the Aztecs)
They speak Chinese.
They like fire works.
They like to celebrate.
The law says they can only have like one kid.
They had an emperor.
There is no such thing as Chinses language. There are two, but I forgot the names.
They use the little sticks. (chop sticks)
They use boats.
They have a hard alphabet. They write differently.
In some of the operas the men play women.
Their culture is advanced.
They don't have much furniture.
People sell stuff in the street.
They play a lot of board games.
They believe in a thing called Fung Shui.(sp?)
They like tea.
They have a Buddha.
Their numbers are different.
They used to kill the girls when they were born.
My mom said they believe when they rub the Buddha's belly, it would bring good luck.Student Questions
Do they have a Chinese Empire?
Do they eat cats and dogs?
Do they believe in Buddhism? China is close to India. (Yay for my kids making that connection!!)
How are Japan and China different?
Do they ever battle?
Do the China and the Philipines speak the same language?
Do they have monks there?
Was it the Chinese or the Japanese that brought over the samuri?
Do they use cars over there?
Why don't they like cheese?
Do they eat eggs over there?
Don't they eat the duck eggs?
Don't eggs come from cows? (my 6th graders sure are cute and funny)
Does China have ememies of countries?
Did paper come from China?
Does China have a different time zone.

GuestThanks for that Amanda. I hate to admit it, but my 9th graders' impressions are not that dissimilar. Although, when our department hosted some visiting teachers from a private boarding school, they did pose very thoughtful questions.
