was reflecting on how to teach and work with the idea of vendettas in my classroom. curiously enough, can't help but make ties to the criminal justice system. after spending time looking up and considering the idea of a vendetta, i found it defined as a prolonged series of retaliatory, vengeful or hostile acts in exchange of such acts. ask anybody who has been convicted of a crime if their punishment often outweighs their crime. This may lead to interesting inquiry on whether or not vengeful people become lawmakers... a topic, perhaps of high interest to rebellious teens.

I recently completed my lessons on Bushido and samurai culture and its lasting influence on Japanese pride and honor, especially among the military. In years past, I have laid on very thick the idea that samurai were at the top of the "Most Honorable/Loyal" however this year, I had more students than ever before ask, but what about the samurai who were not so honorable? This was the first year that I actually acknowledged (and had an answer for) questions like this. It was heartbreaking to hear Prof Yamashita talk of the "dishonorable" actions that were common among the esteemed warriors of Japan, but now I am able to give my students a more realistic depiction of the true history of the time period.

I know, how cool was that! My students are going to love hearing about vendettas, but I loved how the government controlled them so strictly. And if you posted a vendetta you had to follow through, so interesting!

This topic was especially interesting for me. Warriors and vendettas are always interesting to hear about and understand. I can easily relate this information to use in my classroom, but I think that the best will be when the students hear about the very formal way to get revenge. It was a fun class.
