Loved the ping pong diplomacy story http://worldchampionshipofpingpong.com/tag/glenn-cowan. You could even add in a short Forest Gump clip along with the primary source cartoon. Students would love this.

One of the greatest scenes in Forest Gump is Forest playing ping-pong in China. I never new the connection to the real life story of Glenn Cowan. This story would be interesting to discuss in class. Question to possibly raise: How does face-to-face encounters overcome stereotypes? I also found the following website students could review. http://blog.nixonfoundation.org/2011/07/ping-pong-diplomacy-a-primer/

I think you may have talked about this, but not in great detail. Why was Liu Shaoqi arrested and imprisoned? Can you reiterate how he died? How did his death play a role in China at that time? Did his death even matter? Did you mention his death and how he died just to emphasis Mao and his power?

In America suicide is frowned upon. How is suicide viewed in East Asia today and in the past? Would the answer most likely be it was the respectable thing to do?

So, although Chairman Mao was responsible for the Cultural Revolution, the blame was shifted to his wife and three other people? The people under Mao were tired of the revolution, but were too afraid to tell him, or force him to stop, so they waited until he was dead to avenge the deaths?

I found some great primary sources for China's New Marriage Law. I often find students don't think of visuals as primary sources, but often like them best. I would be interested in understanding more about the symbols and I think this website gives a good explanation of the symbols. http://chineseposters.net/themes/marriage-law.php

I thought it was interesting to see modern day China and a more recent history of China. I remember when I was growing up in the 1980s my parents had a pretty negative view of China. I heard about the communism and it was implied that China was a growing threat to the United States. Now, I hear about China as a threat, but it is more of a economic power threat than a violent threat.

I liked hearing about how Mao and his philosophy affected China over the time period of his reign.

My friend's parents own a couple factories in China, and it is very interesting to hear about her travels there, her interactions with the Chinese, and her business relationships. I was shocked to see her pictures of cities in China and the incredible smog and congestion of many of the places she sees. I am curious to see how China develops over time, and if American views will continue to transform.

I was thinking the same thing about suicide in Asia, Tamika. There are very different view about suicide in the West than in the East. Hopefully this isn't too grim, but how is suicide such an easy option. ( I know in some cases it is more honorable, but it is interesting to understand other aspects of the issue).
