I think the Mongol (Yuan) Empire was larger based on a single land mass, though the later Russian and Soviet Empires would seem to exceed that land mass. The British Empire? I would guess guess a greater population subject to British rule at the peak of their Empire.

So are we going to cover in some detail the xenophobic Boxer Rebellion of the summer of 1900? Thanks!

Katie suggests that it would be great for participants to talk with each other about how these things might be taught. I quite agree, but we devote most of the in-class time to providing information (since our time is so limited and since people have varied interests and teaching responsibilities), expecting that at other times you'll talk with participants about how to use these ideas. We also use the forum for this. How might the ideas you heard or read about today be introduced to students?

MArco..... Polo......Trying to find MArco Polo in China sounds like a fruitless effort... given the lack of scholars pursuing the issue... and if his stories sparked the imaginaation, and hence the exploration and expansion that changed the world, does it really matter? His stories whether first hand or not, did effect change. A fabulous topic for students to discuss!

The philosophical debate was fun. Today we learned that the Han authorities blended legalism with confucianism, though AP World has stressed Confucianism mostly. This fact is new to me.
