GuestI just finished this introductory lesson series on Mandarin. It is well written and covers the very basics of pronunciation, characters, and grammar elements. Of course, it does emphasize that you must hear the spoken language. However, I found this a great overview!
Can be overwhelming to do all at once, but well worth the time.

GuestThanks Jennifer.
In the midst of "practice packing" to see what I can bring and take home. Want to have room for gifts to family friends and items of use in the classroom. But not enough for a suit of armor. LOL
Will be hitting up Fry's and REi this weekend.Appreciate everyone's great tips.

SpectatorHi Jennifer,
Please upload your currency cheat sheet to the forum and let others download it and print if they chose. Others may find a small calculator handy. 6.83 in China, 32 in Taiwan, 7.8 in Hong Kong. Time to strengthen one's division skills.

GuestHi Everyone,
Suggestion: Bring a change of clothes with you in your carry-on luggage.
This way you'll have something clean to wear just in case the airline happens
to loose your luggage when we arrive in Beijing.Watch, by the act of me giving this suggestion, my suitcase will end up in Timbuktu!

GuestSo true. I always bring an extra set. The one time I chose to make my carry-on lighter, my luggage did not make it until four days after I did.

SpectatorHi Folks,
We'll be visiting the Yungang caves. I showed you some pictures of them at the orientation. We'll not get quite as close as the visitors in the attached photo got early in the 20th century.

GuestI am totally committed to packing light, but I am thinking that with the amount of liquids I will be bringing (contact solution, etc.), I might not be able to follow the US liquid rules to carry on my luggage. Are other people planning on checking bags? Will this be a problem?[Edit by="showe on Jun 24, 1:45:18 AM"][/Edit]

GuestI forgot to mention, Bath and Body Works has these bags that fold in to a tiny, lightweight square. The would be great to take shopping. They are only $2.50
