I followed your link to "goodreads.com" and enjoyed reading Amy's quotes. There are a few of her quotes I could share with my students. "Everything I've ever done that's valuable is something I was afraid to try" and "every day that you don't practice is a day you're getting worse" are two quotes my eleven-year-old students can understand. I went to Amy's website, http://www.amychua.com, and read the inspiration for her book. Thank you for sharing this resource.

Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother sounds like such a great connection to "Two Kinds." This year my district created a culture/identity unit and added "Women" by Alice Walker and "Internment" by Juliet Kono to show different perspectives of one's identity/culture. I added "Two Kinds" to the mix as well and my ninth graders enjoyed it!

I find Amy Tan to have a good grasp on what it is like to straddle the divide between being Chinese and being American. She looks so closely at how each culture shares values while at the same time looking at how those same cultures often clash. I love her insight.

I recently taught Amy Tan's short story "Two Kinds," which is excerpted from Tan's novel, The Joy Luck Club. I located a couple of resources that added needed dimension for my high school class. The story is taught at several grade levels, but Clay directed me to some resources that helped my students better understand the generational and geographic conflicts that arise between the narrator and her mother in the story. One resource I used was some quotes from Amy Chua, the author of Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. I also located an article on the Chinese "loser" phenomena that has Chinese youth publicly rejecting some of the high-achiever trappings of previous generations. If you are interested Chua has a website amychua.com and I used a few quotes from the following site: http://www.goodreads.com/author/quotes/59966.Amy_Chua For loser http://www.scmp.com/news/china/article/1232976/chinas-underdog-youth-find-success-diaosi-or-loser-identity and others
