KeymasterDear colleagues,
As a member of the Alumni Board of Directors at Loyola Marymount University, I would like to inform you of an opportunity to attend a lecture at LMU on Saturday, March 15th from 11:30 a.m.-5 p.m. during the President's Day celebration. I have enclosed the link to the web site for registration with the course descriptions offered that day. You need not be a former or current student at LMU, in order to attend this course offering. There is a small fee of $35 which includes two class sessions and lunch. There may be an opportunity to gain university credit for courses taken either this year or next.
A few of the many courses being offered:
China in Transition: Cultural and Historical Implications on the Summer Olympics 2008
Taught by Associate Professor Robin Wang, Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. This presentation will focus on the Beijing Olympics as a symbol and opportunity for China rising as an important player on the global stage. Why were the Chinese excited about winning the Olympic bid in 2000? How does this cultural phenomenon reflect the thousands of years old philosophical systems of belief and values?Professor Robin R. Wang is director of the Women's Study Center in Beijing, vice-president of the Association of Chinese Philosophers in America, and professor of philosophy at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Having received her Ph.D. from the Univesity of Wales, Cardiff, in the UK in 1998, she has already authored three books and numerous articles, serving as a proposal reviewer and panelist for the National Endowment for the Humanities. A new edition of her book Reason and Insight: Western and Eastern Perspectives on the Pursuit of Moral Wisdom, co-authored with T. Shanahan, has just been published, Chinese Philosophy in an Era of Globalization, and Images of Women in Chinese Thought and Culture: Writings on Women from Pre-Qin Period to Song Dynasty are forthcoming.
Missionaries, Martyrs, and Madmen: Jesuits on the Japanese and Catholic Theatre in Japan
Taught by Assistant Professor Kevin Wetmore, Jr., College of Communication and Fine Arts
This lecture gives an overview of the Catholic Church in Japan and 450 years representing Catholicism and Jesuits on the Japanese Stage. In 1549, Francis Xavier was the first Catholic Missionary to set foot on Japanese soil. Within a few months, Japanese actors were appearing onstage as Catholic characters, while the Jesuits were staging their own plays to educate the Japanese about Christianity. The link: http://www.lmu.edu/pagefactory.aspx?PageID=33464&PageMode=View
The registration page should be up and running by Monday, February 11, 2008.
Perhaps, Clay might consider this opportunity as one of the options for making up a class session, should any of our class members be ill or unable to attend one of the scheduled seminars.
Hope to see you there!
