A famous group of Americans was visiting China this past week. This group included Cellist Yo Yo Ma and author Amy Tan, Filmmaker Joel Coen and Actress Meryl Streep. It’s was sponsored by the Asia Society and the Aspen Institute. It makes sense since people love talking about movies and books, so why not have a festival dedicated to that. People can have fun talking about books and movies and who knows maybe the dialogue might veer off in a different direction and it will definitely lead to a better understanding between the two cultures. That’s I am taking this class, so I can get a better understanding about Asia, specifically China. Even when we are confused we learn something. Joel Coen spoke about a Chinese remake of one of his films. A Woman, A Gun, and A Noodle Shop, which is a remake of Blood Simple. He remarked about how the film wasn’t really a remake as much as it was a reworking of his film. He was confused about why the movie was done the way it was, but I’m sure in his analysis he learned a bit more about Chinese culture than he thought he would have. Another interesting thing I found out is that Meryl Streep is big in China. Who knew? Chinese women showed up wearing identical yellow hoodies that said Meryl Streep across the front, as well as with scrapbooks and memorabilia. I think it is important for Chines artists to have a chance to discuss ideas freely, because the Chinese government is constantly censoring information. They want artists to be creative, but at they same time they want them to stay within certain boundaries, but you can't have both. For more information check out this site.
