US-China Institute Videos

I have spoken with several people recently who have visited China within the last year. One of the common threads they have shared is the propensity of the Chinese to spit, not just in public, but even in private spaces! We Americans sometimes spit too, but I gathered from talking with these recent visitors that the Chinese spit much more often and with less inhibition. You can see further confirmation of this custom while watching the US-China Institute videos, one of which shows Deng Xiaoping, the leader of China, spitting into a spittoon during a meeting with US officials.

I got a chance to watch one of the videos we received during our time at USC, and really enjoyed it. It's such a wonderful example of how far relations have come between the US and China in the last 30 years. The video focuses on the US correspondents who were the first to live in China as journalists. Their experience was frustrated by the fact that they could not talk to Chinese people, and they were not allowed to venture into inner-China on their own. Their experience was also made difficult by the fact that their accommodations were in a run-down Beijing hotel. Despite these limitations, a camaraderie developed between these pioneers of Far East journalism, and they were able to produce some quality stories during their years in China.
