This website is a relatively fair view and detailed account of the attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The website not only details the attacks, but also goes over the global impact of the bombs today. The article discredits the idea that the bombing of Japan was justified. The article details the destruction in Japan and gives first hand accounts and statistics of the immediate and long term effects of the atomic bombs. The website also addresses the common argument that the United States dropped the atomic bombs on an already defeated Japan in order to show the power of the United States to the Soviet Union. In the article, Truman is quoted thanking God for the atomic bombs. Where American Christians are shocked by his response and give no credibility or justification of the statements made by the President.
An excellent way to use this article would be to do a gallery walk including the primary source accounts from this website and some of the imagery following the attacks. Students would be asked a series of discussion questions followed by a writing prompt asking for a summary and opinion of the attacks in Hiroshima and Nagasaki--detailing both short and long term effects.
