    Hello everyone,

Welcome to the web discussion forum for the 2010 USCI Summer Residential Seminar on "East Asia Since 1800"!

This is a space in which we can all get acquainted prior to the seminar. To that end, it would be great if you can reply to this post and provide the following:

    1. Your name
    2. Your school and teaching assignment
    3. A photo (if you so desire; see attached "Using the Web Forum Guide" for detailed instructions)
    4. Anything else about yourself that you would like to share with other teachers and assorted USCI crew (me, another seminar coordinator nallely Arteaga, my USCI colleague Venus Saensradi and Linda Truong and our Associate Director Clayton Dube) with whom you will be spending nine days in August.

We will be posting information relevant to the seminar here, so please check in regularly. Also, for the ease and convenience of all forum users, please limit the number of new threads you create. If something can be shared, discussed or expanded upon under an existing thread, let's do so.

Thank you for your consideration, and welcome to the forum!

    - Xin Jiang

Hi, my name is Audrey Fairchild, and I teach in northern California (Hillsborough) at Crocker Middle School, a public school with 500 students. I teach Social Studies at all grade levels. I am particularly interested in incorporating more Asian studies into the curriculum at the sixth and seventh grade levels, and have traveled to Japan with students this year, and to China 2 years ago. I am so looking forward to meeting everyone at USC and getting to know you!

My Dear Colleagues, First of all I would like to express how grateful I am to be accepted into this
learning community. When I had my first teaching position in an inner city school in Philadelphia, at age 20, I believed I was close to knowing it all. One of the reasons I applied for this program is that, at my age now, I know that "I don't know it all." Currently I am a Case Manager for individuals with Special Needs at one of America's newest and most technologically savvy high schools. ( Abraham Lincoln Centre For The Arts, San Diego, CA ) In that role I support my students across all curricular areas. I feel for fortunate as well, to be involved the training of teachers, counselors, and school psychologists for the last two decades.

    Hi,
My name is Suzanne Lopez and I am really looking forward to this seminar and meeting all of you. I've taught 6th grade at Apple Valley Middle School in the High Desert for the last 5 years. Some years I've taught math and science, and other years Language Arts and Social Studies, as well as an introduction to Art class. Next year I will be teaching a self-contained 4th grade class for the same district.
Many of my students have limited experiences, and I plan to use what I learn here to broaden their knowledge and understanding of Asian culture and history.

Good evening! My name is Rob Sausedo and I teach World and U.S. History at Liberty High in Bakersfield, California. I am orginally from Northern California and I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Oregon and obtained my teaching credential from Cal-State Hayward (It is now called Cal-State East Bay). I have been a season ticket holder for Cal football for the past 5 years so I will not be uttering "fight on" during any spirited discussions!! As a teacher, I have always sought out new teaching strategies, methods and materials to enhance my instruction. With that in mind, I am looking forward to meeting you and participating in this seminar. By the way, I noticed there was a kayaker in the group. Are there any runners? I would welcome running with anyone in the morning before class. I will see you on August 2nd.

Rob, Welcome!! Welcome!!! I find that you have a very interesting background...I believe that any "spirted discussions" amongst SC Alums should be done in private......perhaps they should go to the far reaches of the Mojave or Compton if they want to hum "Fight On" or to discuss the academic reputation or the NCAA championships won since 1888. Perhaps we could talk them into be a a "Cal BEAR" I am curioius how long have you been a Cal Fan?? I 'll be looking foward to meeting you & am really excited about this opportunity we have this summer.
    Fight On,

    Rand,
Thank you for the greetings. I was raised just up the road from Berkeley and I started going to Cal games at Harmon Gym and Memorial Stadium from the time I was in the fourth grade. So the Bears and I go back many years! Are you from the Bay Area or do you have any ties to Cal? I look forward to meeting you.
