Hello everyone,

Welcome to the web discussion forum for the 2009 USCI Summer Residential Seminar on "East Asia Since 1800"!

This is a space in which we can all get acquainted prior to the seminar. To that end, it would be great if you can reply to this post and provide the following:

1. Your name
2. Your school and teaching assignment
3. A photo (if you so desire; see attached "Using the Web Forum Guide" for detailed instructions)
4. Anything else about yourself that you would like to share with the 23 other teachers and assorted USCI crew (me, my USCI colleague Venus Saensradi and Linda Truong and our Associate Director Clayton Dube) with whom you will be spending nine days later this month.

We will be posting information relevant to the seminar here, so please check in regularly. Also, for the ease and convenience of all forum users, please limit the number of new threads you create. If something can be shared, discussed or expanded upon under an existing thread, let's do so.

I am Kathy Heukrodt, I teach World History, World Cultures and Geography at Calabasas High School in Calabasas, Ca. Look forward to attending the seminar and meeting all of you. I am very interested in the history of China and Japan...hope to learn quite a bit.

Greetings! I am from sunny Seattle, WA. It has not rained during the past 40 days, so we are starting a new trend I currently teach 4th grade General Studies at Seattle Jewish Community School. Previously I taught World History and Cultures to middle schoolers and high schoolers in New York City. I am particularly interested in learning more about Korea, as it is a country I know very little about. While visiting Los Angeles, I am excited to see downtown's Chinatown and a supposed neighborhood suburb that has developed into a Chinatown suburb. I do not recall the name. Hi! My name is Desiree Kindig and I currently teach 7th and 8th grade history, la, and science in Arvin, CA at Di Giorgio School. I am really looking forward to learning about Japan and Korea as I know very little about either of those countries.

Hello everyone,
My name is Mark Shadonix. I teach at Hoover High School in San Diego, CA. I teach in one of the orginal buildings that was built when the school was opened in 1930. Last year I taught world history. On Monday I was told that I'll be teaching Government/econ and world history, but today it changed to US History and Government/econ. We shall see what I end up with in September, but hopfully, most of the classes will be within the history department.
I will be in Ohio starting tomorrow, and I'll be exploring the Amish country during my stay.
I am looking forward to meeting with all of you on the 27th of July. Have a great weekend.

My name is Angelica Chavez and I will be teaching at Adolfo Camarillo HS in Camarillo (Ventura County). I will mostly likely be teaching three sections of US History and two sections of World Civ. This is my 5th year teaching. I am really looking foward to this conference to gain a deeper understanding of Asian history.

Hello! I am Roxanne Pompilio. I teach at the School of Creative and Performing Arts in San Diego. I was in China last summer and I am interested in learning more Chinese history. Greetings!

My name is Caroline Owen and I teach History at Alta Loma High School in Rancho Cucamonga, as well as serve as department chair. I usually teach World and U.S. but this coming year I will be only teaching World. I'm excited about this opportunity to learn more about East Asia and learn more about teaching from all of you! (I've been teaching over 15 years now, but I'm the eternal student!)

I'm a little slow getting signed on to these boards because I just returned from Florida, and since my school district has elected to start our school year on August 10th, I'll be spending the last two weeks of my short but lesurely summer with all of you!
