Don't know how many of you will have a chance to check out the local happenings, but if you are interested Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) isn't too far away and they currently have an an exhibit titled "You're Bright Future" showcasing twelve contemporary artists from Korea. I saw the exhibit a few weeks ago and found it highly thought provoking. The works are text rich, visually stimulating, and contain many multimedia elements. The exhibit is also quite political. Check out the intro to the exhibit at http://www.lacma.org/ or skip the intro and go to the home page at http://www.lacma.org/home.aspx Also they do offer a student discount.

P.S. If you do end up going, see if you can find out where I can get a copy of Noonchi, a book featured in one part of the exhibit.

P.S.S. The Natural History Museum (right next door) offers free teacher admission, and the Science Center is free as well.

Great, thanks for starting this thread. I hope others can give some suggestions on what to see around this area as well. Also, if you like history, 25 years ago tonight, Rafer Johnson, the 2 time medalist in the decathlon, lit the Olympic torch two blocks from our hotel at the coliseum. Also, just north of our hotel, in the USC Gym, you can go in and see replicas of the 110 national championship trophies won by the various teams at USC over the years. Even if you aren't a USC sports fan, that's pretty impressive. 😀

You may want to try riding the Metro out to Pasadena, where you can visit Old Town and the Pacific Asia Museum.

USC offers a campus shuttle to Union Station, where the Gold Metro Line will take you to Pasadena.

You may want to drive north through downtown and visit Little Tokyo. It's fairly close to USC and worth a look.

Went to the LACMA last week. They are open until 8:00 and after 5:00 it's pay what you want. The Chinese and Korean art were closed, but the Korean exhibition was interesting - very political, and the Japanese pavilion was open and has some lovely things. It is easy to get to - Take Jefferson north a few miles; left on La Brea - about 1-2 miles, then left on Wilshire and on your right side about a mile down. Pass it, turn right and follow signs for parking. Parking is $7.
