The first book is a seminal work by Margery Wolf to whom all writers on the condition of women in the PRC acknowledge as a major authority on the subject...."Revolution Postponed: Women in Contemporary China" (1985). This is a very important and influential book. The three major sections are ...after the revolution, after land reform, and after the 'cultural ' revolution. The stories, anecdotal reports, and talks are very interesting but now are in some ways like a fly trapped in amber when compared to women's conditions in the urban settings of today. But in many ways things have progressed very slowly. This book contains many tables and has a good bibliography.
The second book, "Personal Voices: Chinese Women in the 1980s" by Emily Honig and Gail Hershatters. This book is a collection of articles translated from Chinese magazines and newspapers. Each of the nine sections ["Growing up female", "The pleasures of adornment and the dangers of sexuality", "Making a friend", "Changing patterns of courtship", "Marriage", "Family relations", " Divorce", "Women and work", "Violence against women", and "Feminist voices" ] is prefaced by excellent introductions. This book has an excellent bibliography.
