This website that I found has a world literature timeline from 2500 BC until 2012. There is a red time bar on the left of the the screen with years. The students will click on the time period we are working on in class. Then when they look at the information in the middle of the page there are icons to the left and right where students can click on pictures, maps, or gain more information on the author, literature, history, and so on.

It would be perfect for my British Literature class because students can relate to a certain period of time based on their history knowledge of their own country. I teach international students, mostly Chinese students, and they can place the time period by exploring other countries including their own. This can also help us see trends in themes or styles of writing across many places, showing students how powerful writing is and how it is influenced.

In my proposed lesson plan outline, I have asked students to compare the development of Chinese and East Asian cultures by identifying representative literary work on a timeline. I think your attached link is a great example.
