I just saw a BBC report on the film industry in China. They interviewed many artists as well as directors. The film industry in China was blossoming in the 1920's and up to the Cultural revolution. Today, the directors are importing foreign consultants to help them learn the latest technology. However due to censorship, thefilms usually deal with love stories and science fiction. Under construction now in China is the largest studio in the world. Also mentioned in NPR was the fact North Korea has kidnapped directors from South Korea since they have done in their film industry and had nobody to do propaganda films.
