Life will find a way. Al Weiwei's subtle, and sometimes, overt protests against Chinese censorship has made his exhibit quite profound. It does not seek to focus solely on his native country of China (from which he can not travel); rather, it presents a dialogue of people from various ethnic groups whose own governments have engaged in some sort of oppression. Choosing his installation on none other than one of the most famous prisons in US history, he uses a mixed media as well as some of the surrounding structures as part of it: Cell Block A and the prison hospital. In his words, he developed it to expand our understanding of "...the purpose of art, which is the fight for freedom."

Thank you for posting information on Al Weiwei's Exhibition. I was not familiar with his work, but it sounded like a great excuse to go out to San Francisco during the summer break. As I looked for the location of the exhibition, I came across with the realization that it ended a couple days ago. However, I posted the first link because it provides pictures of Al Weiwei and his work. If we cannot make it out there, pictures are always second best. The 2nd link provides insight to his projects and background. It also talks about his albums and the significance of the lyrics. "The album includes commentaries on current events (Just Climb the Wall, Hotel USA), documentations of real dialogues (Chaoyang Park, Laoma Tihua), and personal reflections (Give Tomorrow Back to Me, Dumbass). The full album crosses musical genres with influences from pop, rock, punk and heavy metal, and takes us on a journey through Ai’s experience with the conditions of China." As I initially saw the art pictures, the last thing I would've imaged was him as a heavy metal singer. Once again, thank you.
