1. Black Like Mao: Red China and Black Revolution
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ccbh/souls/vol1no4/vol1num4art1.pdf

This semester I will be teaching African-American Studies and I will use this to introduce the role of Chairman Mao and the Chinese revolution in the Black Power Movement of the 1960’s and 70’s. I believe that it’s not possible for people to really comprehend the ideological foundation of the founders of the Black Panthers unless they understand how they were influenced by Chairman Mao. I want the students to understand how people get ideas from around the world and apply them in their own communities and in their own struggles. This also demonstrates that the Chinese Revolution not only affected China but it also influenced revolutions around the world (Black Panthers, Colombia, Peru, Philippines…etc). This is an excellent resource especially for those of us who teach in places like South Central Los Angeles where we have a large African-American population. It is a good way to bridge histories and struggles.
