I just read a book that my dad lent me. A Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi follows Musashi in his travels as a samurai throughout Japan during the Tokugawa period. For anyone who wants to teach about Japanese feudal ties and obligations, this is a good resource. Musashi's book is comparable to Sun Tzu's Art of Warin China. Musashi explains the Way of the warrior, Bushido, and his search for the Dao, or the Way of the sword. The Dao is another cultural aspect diffused over from China. He explains his search for a lord to retain his services during this time of relative peace. We discussed how the samurai declined in economic power during this time and how they had to earn their wages by taking whatever jobs they could get. I thought it had a lot of relevance to what we discussed in class when we learned about the Tokugawa Period.
